Google Home Hub vs Echo Show: What Should You Buy?

Even with Wi-Fi lights, which are known to be slightly less reactive than Zigbee ones, Alexa controls them instantly without having to wait for it to happen. In addition, the difference between the two is that Assistant often confirms the action before starting to do it, while Alexa says "OK" after it's completed the action. I am a Mechanical Engineer with years of experience working in the Security Industry. Aside from giving out useful information here, my hobbies include researching, listening to classical songs. Because there are parental control options that will give parents peace of mind when they are unable to oversee, the Alexa is ideal for close quarters or quiet spaces where children will be doing schoolwork.

If you have asmart doorbell, you can use both devices to communicate back-and-forth with a guest at your door. The Show works with Ring’s video doorbell, while the Home Hub works with Google’s Nest Hello, so your preference might depend on which doorbell you have. Both can also stream footage from a number of outdoor security cameras. It does, however, have a convenient dashboard called Home View. Swiping down from the top of the screen brings up a dashboard for monitoring and controlling your various smart devices, organized by category and by room. Now, about that display… A standout feature shared by the Nest Hub and Nest Hub Max is their stunningly gorgeous displays.

What's the difference between Alexa and Google Home?

Alexa and Google Assistant dominate it with their Echo and Nest devices. However, if this is your first time using a smart speaker, you might be unsure which one is best for you. Shortcuts allow you to control smart devices with voice-activated controls and voice recognition, like turning lights on or off, playing music, setting a specific volume level and more. Dedicated, always-listening voice assistants offer quick access to a huge number of services that used to require a screen -- or, at the very least, our time and attention. Just ask and receive -- a friction-free gateway to just about anything.

I have managed to fix the issue, I have factory reset my Harmony Hub, forced closed and cleared the data on the app. I then connected the hub to my PC and synced from the Harmony software. Everything is now working including the away connectivity in the Harmony App. Alexa lets you create customizable routines that can be combined with IFTTT for mind-blowing results. For instance, it can automatically detect when the contact sensor on a window is open to pause the heating and turn it back on when it's closed.

The Show 10 doesn't have legs, mind you -- it's stuck wherever you put it. Rather, the display is mounted on a base that swivels a full 360 degrees. Apple's HomeKit tilts towards a direction different from what Alexa and Google Home ecosystems offer.

To help out, we’re going to look at how the two devices measure up and which one you may want around the home. Google’s largest and most powerful smart display is the best one we’ve tested for Google Assistant. It has a clear screen, a built-in camera and we were impressed that its facial recognition means it can personalise the reminders and messages you see when you look at the screen. Covered in recycled fabric, this is bigger and taller but still looks like the Nest Mini.

Alexa's Drop In feature only works with other Alexa-enabled devices. The Nest Hub has a floating display with a back like an angled pedestal propping up the larger display. This makes the Nest Hub better for setting up on tight spaces shared with other objects, such as a shelf or the corner of a table. Want an assistant that can handle a proper chat and can understand you like a normal human? The value of Google Assistant is its natural language recognition and that you can issue several commands without having to say the “Hey Google” wake phrase each time.

You see, since a smart display is designed to stay in one spot, you need to be able to view it with ease as you move around the room. A larger screen leads to a clearer picture; this is particularly important when reading details/instructions or watching a show. Voice assistants are clever helpers that are a key part of your smart home system, responding to your instructions, serving up information and controlling your home appliances.

The Nest Hub and Echo Show 5 sound predictably mediocre, with much smaller, less powerful speakers. The Echo Show 8 strikes a nice balance, with solid sound quality that doesn't reach the volume levels of the Echo Show 10, but is far better at filling a room than the Echo Show 5. The Echo Show 10 has a 10.1-inch touch screen with 1,280-by-800-pixel resolution.

Both the Show 2 and the Nest Hub have extensive smart home capabilities. If you have questions about a specific device in your house, look it up to find out what it works with. In the next step, you will come across a “Manage Accounts” screen which comprises a huge list of smart devices supported on Google Home. Go to the “+” button in the Google Home app homescreen to set up a new device. For non-Google smart devices, such as a Tuya Smart device, you will have to use the “Works with Google” option.

The company's open-door policy towards collaboration leaves room for exciting possibilities within your smart home. The Echo Show 5 and Nest Hub win out as the most compelling smart displays under $100 , but the Echo Show 8 offers the best combination of size, power, and price. The Echo Show 10, meanwhile, is the most expensive, but also the most interesting thanks to its motorized tracking. Pricing for smart displays is pretty straightforward, and matches the sizes of the devices. The Echo Show 10 and Echo Show 15 are the most expensive models at $250 each, slightly pricier than the $230 Nest Hub Max, followed by the Echo Show 8 at $130, then the sub-$100 Echo Show 5 and Nest Hub.

If a moving smart display is just a bit too much for your comfort, the Echo Show 8 might be a better fit. Google's smart display still shows off family photos better, and in general Google's interface is more intuitive. However, it can only do so much when it comes to this new camera-panning trend. The Google Nest Hub Max, however, uses atechnology it calls FaceMatchto create a sort of digital fingerprint of your face, much like the facial recognition software on your smartphone. This allows it to tailor onscreen content -- like calendar appointments, reminders and even photos -- to your individual Google account. This ensures that each user accessing an Alexa unit can get a uniquely tuned smart home experience.
